Start with the meaning

A phrase is not a complete costs agreement

The phrase commonly describes a conditional arrangement concerning a solicitor’s professional fees. It does not, on its own, explain responsibility for VAT, medical reports, other outlays or another party’s legal costs. The complete written terms matter.

Use these guides to understand the different parts of a legal bill, the possible costs consequences of a case’s outcome and the information to request before proceeding. They provide general information about Irish legal costs. They do not quote a fee, decide the costs of your case or offer a particular arrangement by Lalloo Solicitors.

In contentious business, a solicitor may not calculate fees or other charges as a percentage or proportion of any award or settlement.
